Decorating Walls with Blue – Pantone’s Colour of 2020

Cobalt, sapphire, azure, sky, navy, and royal. These are all well-known names of variations of the colour blue. Blue is an excellent and popular colour choice when decorating your home and/or office.

Not only do we love this colour, Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year is Classic Blue, a shade reminiscent of the sky at dusk. "It's a colour that anticipates what's going to happen next," said Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute, which selects the Colour of the Year.

Blue is the colour of the sky and sea and is often associated with honesty and serenity.  Surrounded by a palette of cool blues and an array of warm and soothing shades blue helps induce a gently calming effect and feelings of peaceful tranquility to the human spirit.

The colour blue works well with other cool tones however if you are looking for a bolder contrasting colour select a colour from the other side of the colour wheel as an accent, this is why reds and blue are often used together. Denali wallpaper as seen in this picture is an example of contrasting colours.

When decorating smaller spaces that you want to appear larger, cool colours appear to recede and are therefore perfect. When blue is mixed with other colours of the colour wheel a warm tone is produced and this will make a room feel inviting and cozy. Therefore when you are decorating spaces in your home that are generally used by the family, such as the dining room, TV Room, or kitchen, using a warm blue tone is ideal. A great example of this is shown below.

Going with a cooler shade of blue brings a tranquil calming effect to the room and is seen to be more effective when decorating your bedroom, powder room or bathroom as below.
